Fire Protection Engineering Research Integration and Support

Science and Engineering Technologies, Inc. personnel have supported Fire Protection Engineering Research programs at NIST and the Naval Research Laboratory since 2003.

Specific capabilities include:
  • Fire and smoke modeling
  • Sensor Development
  • Large Scale Fire Suppression System Testing
  • Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Data Collection
  • Fire Laboratory Instrumentation Modifications

NIST – Large Fire Laboratory

EXCET Employees provided day-to-day support of fire protection experiments conducted on behalf of Large Fire Lab clients. EXCET was contracted to support the expansion of the calorimetry and instrumentation capability of the facility, modify the data collection software program, and to collect and analyze data during experiments. EXCET also coordinated repairs and maintenance to the Lab’s Air Pollution Control system by a third party vendor.

WUI – EXCET directly assisted NIST engineers in the data collection portion of the “Witch Fire Study” in Southern California. EXCET’s support of this project involved direct collaboration with CALFIRE (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection), collection of thousands of photographic images, and merging of GIS data with the images for input into new modeling software also being developed by NIST.

NRL – Chemistry Division Code 6180 Ship Safety and Survivability

Dr. James Fye, EXCET Vice President of R&D Services, spent 3 years directing Shipboard Fire Protection Research programs on NRL contract N00173-03-C-2005. Principle research efforts included fire protection equipment/material testing, Naval fire protection system development/modification, sensor development programs, large scale fire testing, and fire & smoke modeling. Total annual value of the efforts averaged just under $3 million per year and required coordination of personnel and subcontractor efforts. Dr. Fye managed and integrated a staff of 11 full time employees, 14 part time students, and five maintenance personnel at three separate fire research laboratories (Washington, DC; Chesapeake Beach, MD; and Mobile, AL). He managed up to 11 subcontractors and consultants during the contract, including fire protection engineering groups at Computer Science Corporation (CSC), MPR Associates, and Mississippi State University.
